Reaching Gangtok is not a hassle as the capital of the picturesque mountainous Indian state of Sikkim has superb connectivity with other parts of the country. In recent times, the destination has earned a top place in the Indian tourism sector, and is visited by a large number travelers and vacationers. Home to some splendid tourist attractions such as Rumteck Monastery, Enchey Monastery, Ganesh Tok, Nathu La lake and Hanuman Tok, the place is well linked with various network of transportation. The closest airport is Pakyong and the second nearest is Bagdogra Airport, around nearly 30 km and 125 km away from the main city. On the other hand, the New Jalpaiguri railway station (120 km away) connects this mesmerising city to the rest of the country via broad network of trains. The roads leading to Gangtok from nearby cities are extremely well maintained and scenic.

From Pakyong Airport

Its around 30 km from the city centre is the nearest air base serving the capital city Gangtok. At 4646 ft, Pakyong Airport is one of the five highest airports in India. It is also the first greenfield airport constructed in the North-eastern Region of India, the 100th operational airport in India, and the only airport in the state of Sikkim.

From Bagdogra Airport

Its around 125 km from the city centre is the second nearest air base serving the capital city Gangtok. Carriers including AirAsia India, Air India, Jet Airways, IndiGo, GoAir, vistara and SpiceJet operate regular flights from cities all the prime cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Guwahati and Kolkata to Gangtok. After reaching the airport, travellers can hire taxis or cabs to reach Gangtok, which is around a 4-hour drive.


Gangtok enjoys good connectivity with cities like Darjeeling (96 km), Siliguri (118 km) and Kalimpong (75 km). Taxies and Buses can be easily availed for Gangtok from nearby destinations like Siliguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong. However, the buses are a little time taking option but obviously this is also an economical option. If possible, take a cab instead to save time. Another good and less time taking option would be New Jalpaiguri NJP to Gangtok by bus, which takes around 4 to 5 hours and droop you in Gangtok. The roads are quite well maintained and the beauty that you drive through remains in your eyes for long. The hilly terrains and green fields on the way look absolutely breath-taking. So, if possible do try take a cab only for the sake of experiencing this natural splendour on the way!


New Jalpaiguri, located around 120 km away from the city is main railhead serving the city of Gangtok. The station has good number of trains connecting the destination with rest of the country. A number of trains are available from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kochi. Once you reach the railway station, you can hire cabs to reach the city of Gangtok.
